Student Involvement

Students have an active role at Los Alamitos.  Our students can be involved in so many different ways. Some of the programs that our children participate in are:

Green Team

For the good of the earth, Los Alamitos will continue to recycle, reduce, and reuse, and by doing so, teach our children that this is something we must all do, all the time, every day, everywhere, forever!!!

What is GREEN Team?
Green Team is a student group, supported by parents and teachers, dedicated to maximizing the rate of recycling on campus.  Currently, our focus is lunchtime refuse.  We make sure that the recycle bins are easy for students to access when they throw away lunch trays, beverage containers, ziplocs, etc.  Third, fourth, and fifth graders who join Green Team help their fellow students understand which items are recyclable and transfer the bags of recyclables to the appropriate dumpster.  The kids are wonderfully enthusiastic about this work!  As part of Green Team, they also engage in a variety of related activities that are fun and educational: tie-dying their own work shirts; representing Green Team on visits to other grade’s classrooms; making paper from campus discards; leading a blacktop clean-up during Big Week; and visiting a Materials Recovery Facility.  If your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader would like to join Green Team this year, please fill out and return the attached sign-up sheet.

Green Team Could Do So Much More!
Green Team needs you!  Now that student leadership in lunchtime recycling is well established, Green Team needs more adults who can drive other green efforts.  What a great opportunity for individuals, scouts, or other service groups to show their community spirit!  Children follow adults’ lead in their treatment of resources, and all of us and our children will always cohabit the earth, no matter where our lives take us.  Please email hamiltoncolleen@sbcglobal.net to get started working in one of the areas listed below or to bring new ideas to the program.

Robotics

The FIRST Lego League (FLL) introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. Students can form their own teams (up to 10 students) or we can help them join together in a group. Teams will meet off campus during non-school hours at a time and place that is mutually decided upon with their team members. The competitions occur in middle to late November and, if their team advances, championships are usually held in February.

4th & 5th Graders get to:

  • Design, build & program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts
  • Research challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Learn critical thinking, team-building & presentation skills
  • Participate in tournaments & celebrations

Expect Respect

Safety Patrol

Fifth graders at Los Alamitos have the opportunity of serving on the Safety Patrol.  Training takes place during the last two weeks of their 4th grade year, and again during the first three weeks of their fifth grade year.

Participating in this activity requires a serious commitment of both the student and the parent.  The student is required to maintain:

Academic Performance:
2’s or above (C average) on all report card grades

Citizenship:
S’s (satisfactory) of above for all report card grades

Respect:
for the program and other Safety Patrol Officers

Dependability:
no more than 2 absences or tardies from or at your your assigned station

If your student is a member of the Safety Patrol, he or she will be scheduled for a 1-week shift on a rotational basis. Students receive their schedule on Fridays.  If your child is ill or cannot serve during the 1-week period, the child must notify the captain and find a substitute officer.
